King Henry III and his Parliament Size:M: 60 x 45cm Taken from John Gay's FablesKing Henry III and his Parliament, Westminster, 1258 (1864). In 1258, a group of powerful barons led by Simon de Montfort compelled Henry (1211 1271) to accept the Provisions of Oxford. These forced the king to recognise the rights and powers of Parliament for the first time and installed a new form of government, a council, the members of which were chosen half by the crown and half by the barons.
