including as one imagines how different things might be had things gone the other way

The hinged lid opens easily and sits flush

Whether it was some damage to the painting on the box lid or simply the want to further decorate it I do not know

An unusual one in terms of form, too, in my experience with a recessed lip to the turned lid that fits inside the bentwood box perfectly snug and tight, with the lid lying perfectly flat. A beauty of a yellow underside too. SO pretty. Late 19th century or so. 6 1 8" in
